REBELS OUT TO TAME THE LIONS

Monday April 03, 2017
The first competitive team action for the ‘Cases’ Somerset Rebels at their Oaktree Arena home takes place this Friday (7th) with the 1st leg of their SGB Premiership KO Cup tie against the Leicester Lions, the meeting scheduled to get underway at 7.30pm.

After some initial doubts about Leicester’s participation in 2017, the Lions come to the tapes with a new promotion at the helm, and with it, a new look line-up to that seen in 2016, to the extent that only one of last year’s septet is back with the team this year.

Although late in building their team for 2017, Leicester still have a potent looking side, which is led by Swede Kim Nilsson and the current British Champion, Danny King, the pair having already had a good look at the Somerset track when representing Leicester in last Friday’s SGB Pairs Championship staged at the Oaktree Arena.

Following a year away from British racing, Leicester have brought Pole Kacper Gomolski back to these shores, the 24 year old having been a member of the Poole side which won the league championship in 2015, the Lions top 5 being completed in the shape of Yorkshireman Josh Auty, the only returnee from the 2016 side, and the double World Longtrack Champion, Erik Riss.

Unfortunately, both Auty and Riss are required to ride for their respective SGB Championship clubs the same evening, and as a result, will be absent from the Leicester side, the Lions bringing in Sheffield’s Lasse Bjerre as a guest replacement for Riss and will use the rider replacement facility in place of Auty.

Finally, at reserve, Leicester track two young British riders, namely the double British under-21 champion, Josh Bates, and Suffolk-born Danny Ayres.

Somerset go into Friday’s match with their full complement of 7 riders, the match marking the full home debuts for the Danish duo of Patrick Hougaard and reserve Jan Graversen.

“Of course it goes without say that we will be looking to build up a decent 1st leg lead with which to take to Leicester for the 2nd leg,” said Somerset team manager Garry May, “but by the same token, Leicester will be doing their upmost to stop us from doing that!”

“With the match coming at the start of the season, there is no real form guide ahead of this match, so it will be interesting to see how things pan out, but in saying that, with us having retained 5 of the team from last season, I think that will give us an advantage come Friday night.”
